Arctic Valley a bust in 2012

Hiked all around Arctic Valley today. I saw many bushes, but no berries or flowers. The leaves were eaten as well. Fellow hikers, including a few Native elders, who had hiked various parts of the mountains said that it was the same all over. :( Also, I stepped in bear scat! I did end up getting a full gallon zip-lock bag full of crow berries.

BEAUTIFUL day today!

Get out there and pick! If you find a great or bad place to find blueberries, post as a comment! I'm headed to my secret blueberry spot in the Eagle River area.

GREAT berries at blueberry trail near flat top

Today I went out with Kimi, Roy and Roy's mom to blueberry trail (starts near the trail head for flat top). We picked a few of the first berries ripe this season. In about a week, there will be TONS. Many were green, but there seems to be a good overall harvest this year. Remember to climb up flat top too, if you are athletic, there are many berries there too along the climb.

Gerdwood area

I heard from Julia that the blueberries are starting to fruit near Gerdwood, and look plentiful! I also just saw that if you wnat raspberries, they are out at Pyra's farm. Of course, you have to pay, but there are A LOT, and you would be supporting a family farm.

Arctic Valley 7/27/12

Crowberries still greenish, but doing well. The Blueberries aren't flowering yet, and a park ranger confirmed that this year will be better than last as far as blueberries, but the moths will still be here.

Beach Lake area

Rose hips are almost ready, only a few more days. There aren't many blueberries in the area; it's mostly forested.

Hatcher Pass (Thanks to JT)

"Nary a blueberry to be seen! We may not have gone far enough above the tree line. The cranberries are also mostly green still."

Arctic Valley

7/17/12 Went there today. Found MANY ripening crowberries. The blueberries bushes show no sign of flower buds, and the leaves seem to have been eaten by insects. :( Hopefully it will be an improvement from last year. Camera battery died, so mo pictures.

Welcome!

Please post here about how blueberries and other berries are ripening in the state.
